Many children being pushed to represent their schools in various sporting disciplines are undernourished!
That’s according to the Executive Director of the Jamaica Island Nutrition Network, JINN, Patricia Thompson.
Ms. Thompson is also a nutritionist.
A report published in December last year by the United Nations said there were approximately 2-hundred-thousand undernourished people living in Jamaica.
Ms. Thompson says the undernourishment among children at the basic and primary school level, is due largely to poor meal planning and nutrition.
She says the problem of child nourishment is not being given the attention it deserves.
According to her, many talented student athletes are unable to demonstrate their true ability because of undernourishment.
Ms. Thompson says the time for intervention is now.
