In a recent poll conducted by UNICEF Jamaica, 49-per cent of youth respondents say they did not know the symptoms associated with Dengue fever.

Jamaica is currently in the throes of an outbreak of the mosquitoe-borne disease. The online poll targeted young people between the ages of 19 and 35.

Fifty-one per cent of the 699 persons who responded to the question said they had knowledge of the symptoms of the dengue fever virus.

Danielle Mullings is a UNICEF U-report Youth Council member, who helped with assessing the poll data.

The poll, conducted on January 11, shows that 59-per cent of the youth respondents in St Ann, Hanover and St Mary were not aware of the symptoms associated with Dengue fever.

Many of the respondents were, however, aware of or have employed preventative measures to guard against contracting the Dengue virus.
