UPDATE: PM to Officially Declare State of Public Emergency in St James

Prime Minister Andrew Holness is expected to begin a press conference at Jamaica House in a few moments.

He’s expected to announce that a State of Public Emergency has been declared in the parish of St. James.

Nationwide News understands the State of Emergency came into effect at 6 this morning.

Governor General Sir Patrick Allen reportedly signed it last night.

A massive police and military presence has been underway in the parish since this morning.

The move comes just hours after Prime Minister Holness last evening declared his Government is now prepared to take what he called “firm and resolute measures” to deal with crime.

He was speaking at Fontana Pharmacy’s 50th Anniversary celebration in Mandeville, Manchester.

Mr. Holness says they will treat people with dignity and respect human rights.

The Prime Minister also emphasized that most Jamaicans are decent, law-abiding people.
