There’s a recommendation this afternoon for the appointment of a social growth czar for Jamaica.
The suggestion to the government has come from the Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles.
He says issues of poverty and inequality must be tackled if the country is to achieve the economic growth it desires.
He made reference to Trinidad and Tobago, noting that there must be a balance between social equity and economic development.
Meanwhile, Professor Beckles says the University of the West Indies, Mona, is committed to the growth paradigm established by the Michael Lee Chin-led Economic Growth Council.
He was speaking this morning at a ceremony to induct Prime Minister Andrew Holness into the University’s Honour Park
