The festive political climate in East Portland reached fever pitch today when the governing Jamaica Labour Party’s Annmarie Vaz and the Opposition PNP’s Damion Crawford were formally nominated as their party’s candidate for the upcoming April 4 by-election.
Jubilant supporters and party heavyweights descended on the parish to support their respective candidates. Mrs. Vaz entered Port Antonio Square to loud acclaim from scores of Labourites who shouted Ann.
The cheers heightened as Mrs. Vaz and her husband, West Portland MP, Daryl Vaz, rode a motorcycle in the direction of the Port Antonio Court House where she was nominated.
Shortly after she was duly nominated, an emotional Annmarie Vaz told the media that she’s honoured and grateful to the people of East Portland.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness and JLP Chairman Bobby Montague were among the JLP heavyweights who accompanied Mrs. Vaz to the nomination centre.
Prime Minister Holness says he’s confident Mrs. Vaz will bring East Portland into the win column for the JLP on April 4.
Agriculture Minister Audley Shaw also came out in support of Mrs. Vaz.
West Central St. James MP, Marlene Malahoo Forte was also on had when Mrs. Vaz was nominated. Mrs. Malahoo Forte told our news centre Mrs. Vaz ‘s chances are looking good in East Portland.
