Woman Commits Suicide in Police Lock-Up

The police are investigating a case of suspected suicide after a woman was found hanging from a cloth in her cell at the lockup at the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court yesterday.

Dead is Desrene Morris. The police suspect she committed suicide sometime Thursday afternoon while awaiting a hearing in night court.

Morris was reportedly taken to the holding area located on the compound of the Half Way Tree police station in St. Andrew about 12:45 yesterday afternoon. She was arrested on two warrants.

About 4:30 in the afternoon, officers at the lockup went to take her to court when they noticed she was slumped against the grill of her cell. One end of a blouse she was wearing was reportedly tied around her neck. The other end of the blouse was reportedly tied to the cell door.

Officers on duty rushed Morris to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. The incident has been reported to the Inspectorate of the Constabulary. It’s also been reported to the Independent Commission of Investigations, INDECOM.

Meanwhile, the JCF’s Chaplaincy Service has been dispatched to the woman’s West Kingston community to provide counselling for friends and relatives of the deceased.

The Chaplaincy Service is also providing counselling to the officers who were on duty.
