Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has intervened as the Chikunguya outbreak affecting Jamaica is intensifying.
Mrs. Simpson Miller has directed that an additional 1-hundred-and-50 million dollars be allocated to the Chikungunya response.
Among other measures, the money is intended to assist in a massive clean-up campaign aimed at destroying and removing mosquito breeding sites.
A statement this afternoon from the Office of the Prime Minister says Prime Minister Simpson Miller today directed that Jamaica’s National Emergency Response Team be activated to coordinate and support the Chikungunya outbreak response.
According to the OPM, Mrs Simpson Miller also chaired an inter-Ministerial meeting on the issue on Wednesday.
The OPM says today the Prime Minister addressed a technical meeting and mandated those involved to be thorough and consistent in the planning, implementation and public communication of the ongoing national response.
The Prime Minister has been facing mounting criticism for her silence as suspected cases of Chikungunya are mounting.
Yesterday, Opposition Leader, Andrew Holness demanded that Mrs. Simpson Miller address the Chikungunya outbreak and remove her embattled Health Minister, Dr. Fenton Ferguson.
