Twenty five persons were detained today and two gunmen shot dead, following a major operation by the security forces in the troubled community of Flanker in St. James.

The Police say five men, who were wanted in connection with serious crimes, are among those apprehended.

The joint Police-Military operation began at 4-this morning and up to minutes before news time was still underway.

Commanding Officer for St. James, Senior Superintendent Steve McGregor, says today’s activity is part of a push by the security forces to take back the parish from criminals.

SSP McGregor says 25-persons were detained in Flanker.

He says five men remain in custody on suspicion of perpetrating murders and shootings.

SSP McGregor says several gunmen fled to a nearby community, where they were pursued by lawmen.

He says two of the gunmen were killed in a gunfight.

The Independent Commission of Investigations, INDECOM is probing the killing of the two men.

St James has recorded more than 1-hundred-and-20 murders since the start of 2015.

Several of those murders have taken place in the community of Flanker.

The Police have blamed the violence on the lotto scam and gang activity
