Five Jamaican singers have been featured on the Rolling Stone’s 200 Greatest Singers Of All Time list.
Jamaican artistes Dennis Brown, Toots Hibbert, Bob Marley, Barrington Levy and Luciano were all featured on the list.
The list was released on their website on Sunday.
The Rolling Stone says originality, influence and depth of an artist’s catalogue were among the criteria used to determine the singers on the list.
Luciano was ranked #143, with the article citing songs such as Sweep Over My Soul and It’s Me Again Jah as iconic reggae songs of the 90’s. Barrington Levy was ranked #119.
Rolling Stone described his voice as cutting and commanding.
Bob Marley was listed at #98 and was praised for reflecting the struggles and aspirations of tens of millions of people across the world. Toots Hibbert was ranked #94, recognized for having a rough edged fierce voice.
Dennis Brown was ranked #67, being described as having a soulfulness that was unimpeachable.
