Approximately seven thousand students remain absent from the classroom despite the efforts of the Ministry of Education.

That’s according to Acting Director of Safety and Security at the Ministry, Richard Troupe.

Mr. Troupe was speaking during yesterday’s sitting of Parliament’s Public Administration and Appropriations Committee, PAAC.

The Ministry launched its Yard to Yard Find the Child Initiative as a means to return some 120,000 students to the classroom who were displaced due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr. Troupe says the number which remains unaccounted for is made up mostly of senior students who’ve opted not to return to school for economic reasons.

The school safety and security head says an App has been developed which will help in engaging more students.

However, he notes that an issue has also been identified regarding poor attendance among a significant number of the school population which has been re-engaged to the education system.
