Minister Thwaites is this afternoon assuring the nation’s teachers that the government intends to pay them the approximately 1-billion dollars owed to them, on time.
The sum became due following a re-classification exercise in 2007.
Minister Thwaites says the payment to be made to the approximately 25-percent of the island’s teachers who’re not paid directly by the government, should be resolved ‘within a couple of weeks’.

The Jamaica Teachers’ Association today said that it’s members are upset, given indications that the August deadline could be missed.
This, because of an audit being carried out by the Ministry of Finance to verify the amounts to be paid to teachers.
JTA president, Dr Mark Nicely, says teachers have not ruled out taking action if they do not get their money.
