Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Mottley, QC, has been named one of the world’s most influential leaders.
That’s according to Time Magazine.
The publication released its annual Time 100 list a few hours ago. The yearly index strives to celebrate pioneers across industries, acknowledging their contributions to their chosen fields.
Time recognizes Mottley’s continued climate advocacy, applauding her strident defense of small island-states amid rising global temperatures.
The Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, describes Mottley as ‘Bold, fearless, and possessing a great intellect and wit.’ She says, ‘The Prime Minister…is an embodiment of our conscience, reminding us all to treat our planet, and therefore one another, with love, dignity, and care’.
In 2021 Prime Minister Mottley was awarded the Champions of the Earth Award, the United Nation’s highest environmental honor, for her policy leadership. At the United Nations General Assembly that year, Mottley chided world leaders for what she described as their inaction in combatting the climate crisis, which she says is imperiling the future of countries like her own.
Under her tenure, Barbados developed a plan to phase out fossil fuels by 2030. That initiative is the first of its kind in the Caribbean.
Mottley, the first woman Prime Minister of Barbados, is the second Bajan to be named on the Time 100 list. The magazine dubbed Billionaire, Grammy Award Winner, and Bajan national hero, The Right Honourable Robyn Rihanna Fenty, an Icon in 2018.
