The Tourism Ministry is dispelling rumors that the Riu Hotel in Ocho Rios, St Ann breached safety protocols under the Disaster Risk Management Act at the weekend.

Portfolio Minster, Edmund Bartlett, says social media trolls are using pre pandemic images to peddle fake news.

The Minister notes that the relevant authorities verified that the hotel was adhering to the necessary protocols.

He says he is bewildered by the extent to which people would go to spread rumors.

During the first of the weekend lockdowns announced by the Prime Minister, images circulated on social media which suggested that while the streets were empty, Riu Hotel was full.

Minster Bartlett says the images were taken prior to the outbreak of the pandemic.

Minister Bartlett says stakeholder groups will be tasked with the responsibility of monitoring hotels for the two remaining weekend lowdowns.

He says this will create more public trust.

Meanwhile the Tourism Minister explains that the public mischief will not shake the sector.

He adds that bookings for summer may out do that of 2019.
