The Police Commissioner for Belize, Chester Williams is not ruling out requesting a state of emergency, SOE, to deal with the upsurge in murders in Belize as he notes that there are elements determined to terrorise communities.
Commissioner Williams stated that the police have already been directed to quell the feuds erupting in different areas between gangs.
The police chief noted that the police currently put on programs to try and work with the gangs and do interventions with them but said that some of those involved in crime “don’t want anything good in life.”
Belize recorded 125 murders in 2021, an increase on 2020 which saw 102 homicides reported in the Central American nation.
