The Meteorological Office says Jamaicans should brace for rain as Hurricane Joaquin makes its way over the Bahamas.

The category three hurricane is not a threat to Jamaica, but is expected to bring some well needed showers to the island.

On the forecast track, the centre of Joaquin will move near or over portions of the central Bahamas today and tonight, before passing over or near portions of the north-western Bahamas on Friday.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 1-hundred-and-95 kilometers per hour with higher gusts.

Some strengthening is forecast in the next day or so, with fluctuations in intensity possible on Friday.

The Met Office says a trough induced by the system is expected to increase moisture and instability across the island today through to Friday.
