National Security Minister, Peter Bunting, is warning that passage of legislation to decriminalize possession of 2-ounces of ganja is no indication that Jamaica is easing up in the fight against illegal drugs.

Bunting made the comment this afternoon as he opened debate on a bill aimed at reforming Jamaica’s ganja laws.

Among other things, the bill will ensure that persons found in possession of 2 ounces or less of ganja would not attract a criminal record.

The bill will also make possession of two ounces of ganja a ‘ticketable’ offence that would not mandate a court appearance.

Minister Bunting told the House that Jamaica has been careful to remain committed to its international treaties.
