President of the Jamaica Umbrella Group of Churches, Reverend Dr Peter Garth is recommending Churches include mechanisms to ensure child protection in their annual budgets.

This follows recent reports of members of the clergy being involved in child rapes and other sex crimes.

Some Church leaders want those who refuse to associate with umbrella groups to be seen as suspicious and to be ostracized.

Dr Garth says there needs to be robust enforcement of child protection laws and policies.

He notes that in some cases for example where Pastors rape children, they receive the full support and backing of Church members.

But Dr Garth says that is why it’s important to have every Church be a registered member of an association.

In the meantime, President of the Jamaica Council of Churches, Reverend Newton Dixon says it’s time Churches start discussing and implementing an accountability framework.
