Finance Minister, Dr. Nigel Clarke, has tabled legislation slashing the duties on electric vehicles. Dr. Clarke, speaking in the House of Representatives, says this will move the import levy from 30 per cent to 10.

Dr. Clarke says this fulfils a promised thrust toward greener and renewable energy sources.

However, the policy will apply only to vehicles no older than three years at the time of import.

The finance minister argues that this is to ensure that the country keeps up with the latest technology.

However, Opposition Spokesman on Energy, Phillip Paulwell, questioned the wisdom of placing such a limit.

He says this will essentially neuter the policy before it begins.
