Finance Minister, Dr. Nigel Clarke says the government must address the pay imbalance at the higher end of the public sector to drive growth in the country.
He made the remark on Thursday during his address at the annual general meeting of the Jamaica Civil Service Association.
Shaloy Smikle tells us more.
Dr. Clarke told the gathering of civil servants that while the government has no challenge filling posts at the lower and middle levels of the public service, it’s faced with several obstacles when looking to attract top-tier talent.
Dr. Clarke explained that for years, successive wage negotiations focused primarily on remuneration for those in the middle level throughout the public service.
That point did not go down well with many in the audience, with audible rejections of the statement. Dr. Clarke doubled down, stating that his argument was based on facts.
