The Caribbean Examinations Council, CXC, this year recorded its lowest cohort of exam candidates in four years.
The disclosure was made by the Director of Operations at CXC’s Examination Services Division, Dr. Nicole Manning.
Dr. Manning said there was also a reduction in candidate and subject entries for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination, CAPE.
This year’s exams were written between June and August, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Dr. Manning, more students received passing grades in English Language than Mathematics in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate, CSEC.
Forty-one percent of students received a passing grade for math while 74 percent received grades one to three in English A.
She says there were high levels of absenteeism recorded for both CSEC and CAPE exams..
More than 15-thousand deferrals were recorded for this year’s CSEC exams.
However, Dr. Manning noted that over 4000 students have deferred their exams to January 2022.

The regional June/July 2021 exam results will be released tomorrow, October 15.
Meanwhile, Dr. Manning says the more than 3-thousand candidates yet to register still have time to select their preferred sitting for future examinations.
The deadline to do so is November 5.
Dr. Manning noted that the Examination body recognizes the hardships being faced by students and parents during the Covid-19 pandemic.
