The government is planning a phased implementation of the country’s Data Protection Act.
This as several private sector companies have indicated, they will not be able to meet the December 1 deadline to confirm the new law and the anticipated regulations.
Minister with responsibility for Digital Transformation, Senator Dr. Dana Morris Dixon, provided the update on Wednesday.
The minister says the long-awaited regulations that will govern the Act’s implementation are set to be brought to Parliament by the end of November.
She’s assuring Jamaicans they have nothing to fear from the new framework. She says the law is intended to ensure Jamaica complies with international standards on data protection and security.
Meanwhile, the country’s Information Commissioner, Cecilia Barclay, is seeking to assure businesses that they have nothing to fear from the December 1 deadline for the implementation of the Data Protection Act.
She says the government intends to maintain a collaborative approach to the law’s implementation.\

Ms. Barclay was supported by Minster Morris Dixon, who gave an assurance that any sanctions for breaches of the Act would not be brought into force without consultation.
