Opposition Leader, Mark Golding, has labelled as a disgrace the government’s decision to postpone the Local Government Elections for a further 12 months.

The polls must now be held by February 2024.

Mr. Golding says the move is embarrassing.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed the Representation of the People (Postponement of Elections to Municipal Corporations and City Municipalities) Act despite strong protests from the Opposition.

The government pointed to economic considerations as one of its reasons to justify the delay.

But Opposition Spokesman on Finance, Julian Robinson, says the government has the revenue to hold the polls.

Meanwhile, Local Government Minister, Desmond McKenzie, says the Holness administration is not afraid of facing the people.

He says the present administration has done more for Local Government than at any other time in the country’s history.
