Senior Fisheries Officer at the National Fisheries Authority, Junior Squire, is recommending that fisherfolk access better diver training.
His advisory follows a shark attack incident over the weekend in Westmoreland that resulted in the death of a fisherman.
The 53-year-old fisherman Donovan Heywood died in hospital after he was attacked by a shark that ripped off his entire left arm leaving only the bone.
Mr. Squire says divers should equip themselves with gear necessary to provide medical care in cases of emergency.
He’s also encouraging fisherfolk to utilise what he calls a dive plan.
