Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, is offering condolences to the government and people of the United States in the aftermath of the deadly shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.
In a statement, Senator Johnson-Smith says she’s dismayed at the senseless killing of so many innocent people.
She says she cannot accept increased gun violence as a normal part of society even as she acknowledged concerns about mental health.
The Foreign Minister confirmed that the Ministry has been monitoring the situation since Sunday, with the support of its diplomatic missions in the U.S.
She says so far, there has been no confirmation of any Jamaican nationals being injured or killed in the shooting.
Statistics from the 2010 census conducted by the United States Census Bureau indicate that there are some 14,662 Jamaicans in Texas.
