Opposition Spokesman on Health, Dr. Ken Baugh, says at least four parishes are seeing a full blown epidemic of Chik-V.

Dr. Baugh, a veteran medical doctor, made the statement this morning at an emergency media briefing at the JLP’s Belmont Road Headquarters.

He identified the parishes of St. Thomas, St. Catherine, and Kingston and St. Andrew as those worst affected.

Dr. Baugh says his view has been informed by feedback from several authorities, including medical professionals.

On the upside, Dr. Baugh noted that the majority of Chik-V cases are mild.

He says in his evaluation at this time, Chik-V is not a threat to tourism.

But Dr. Baugh argued that increased vigilance is key and accused the Dr. Fenton Ferguson-led Health Ministry of understating the extent of the Chik-V problem.

He says during a sit down with Dr. Ferguson yesterday he communicated his view that three parishes are experiencing an epidemic and the Health Minister agreed to conduct further checks.
