Approximately 50 million dollars have been allocated for the renovation of the Western regional shelter for victims of gender-based violence.

The announcement was made by Gender Minister, Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, at the launch of the Jamaica Gender Assessment Report at the Spanish Court Hotel in New Kingston on Thursday.

The women’s shelter is one of several initiatives to provide safety for female victims of domestic violence in Jamaica.

The gender assessment report shows that at least 25 percent of women have experienced physical violence from a male partner, while 47 per cent of women who’ve been in relationships have been subject to controlling behaviour.

Minister Grange says amendments to the Domestic Violence Act have also been completed.

The Minister says funding is available for the creation of a Sexual Harassment Unit.
