Nationwide News understands that the Government of Jamaica has formally revoked the telecommunications licenses of Symbiote Investments, which trades as Caricel.
Caricel was advised of the decision in a letter yesterday. The letter was signed by Telecommunications Minister, Dr. Andrew Wheatley.
In the letter, Dr. Wheatley made reference to correspondence sent by his Ministry to Caricel on November 17 last year.
That letter informed Caricel that the Office of Utilities Regulation, OUR, had recommended that it’s licenses be revoked on the basis that the company failed to provide information requested.
Dr. Wheatley told Caricel that its failure to provide the information represents a breach of the Telecommunications Act.
Caricel had been given until December 1 to say why its licences should not be revoked.
Dr. Wheatley noted in his letter that Caricel failed to give a reason which has resulted in the revocation of six licences which had been issued to it.
Two weeks ago – Minister Wheatley told the House of Representatives that he intends to revoke Caricel’s license due to several breaches.
