Member of Parliament for St. Andrew West Rural, Juliet Cuthbert Flynn, is calling for the decriminalization of abortion.

She made the call as she filed a Private Member’s Motion in the House of Representatives this afternoon.

Mrs. Cuthbert Flynn says the time has come to give women the right to choose.

Currently, terminating a pregnancy is criminalised under sections of the Offences Against the Person Act.

Mrs. Cuthbert Flynn says those sections should be removed and replaced by a civil law.

She says healthcare facilities are acting as accessories to the crime of abortion, when they provide support to women who seek medical care following an illegal abortion.

The St Andrew West Rural MP says Parliamentarians are morally bound to provide access to safe abortions for women who desire to access the procedure.
