The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica, PSOJ, says the government must invest in long-term measures to ensure the availability of water. This amid a worsening drought.

Sacha Vaccianna-Riley is executive director of the PSOJ.

Last month, water minister, Matthew Samuda, announced that cabinet had approved an additional $500 million to strengthen the government’s drought response programme.

The ministry is also planning to acquire and distribute 5,000 black water-storage tanks across the island over the next three months.

But Vaccianna-Riley says the current situation highlights the importance of planning for the future.
