The government has expressed sadness at the loss of Hurricane Beryl victims Alrick Moncrieffe and Kayon Sterling, and has committed support to their families.

Moncrieffe was swept away by flood waters while attempting to retrieve a football from a gully in Arnett Gardens, St. Andrew on Wednesday.

Ms Sterling was killed in Hanover after being struck by a tree as it uprooted.

In a statement Friday morning, the Office of the Prime Minister, OPM, expressed condolences to their families.

The OPM says Hurricane Beryl has brought significant hardship to the nation, and any loss of life is a profound tragedy.

Cabinet Minister Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange says she has contacted the Moncrieffe family on behalf of Prime Minister Andrew Holness, and has personally offered critical support.

However, the gender minister says she has so far been unable to establish direct contact with Ms Sterling’s family due to connectivity challenges in Hanover.

She says the government is committed to providing support to the affected families and the broader communities as the government navigates the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl.

Meanwhile, cousin of Ms Sterling, Cleveland Thompson says her 26-year-old relative was an ambitious woman.

Ms. Sterling was killed after being struck by an uprooted tree in Green Island, Hanover on Wednesday.

Reports are that windy conditions started shortly after 2 pm when Ms Sterling, a hotel employee lost internet service.

She reportedly asked one of her sons to go and check what was happening. The son reportedly refused to go outside in the storm.

However, at around 2:30 pm Ms Sterling decided to go by herself when she was struck. She died on the spot.
