The Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, Paula Llewelyn, says she believes it’s ‘fair’ for people facing murder charges to be allowed to enter a guilty plea on sentence reduction day.
She says the judge still has the final say in determining the final sentence.
She says a social enquiry report is also taken into consideration to determine a sentence.
Accused persons before the Home Circuit Court and the Home Circuit section of the Gun Court qualify for a reduction of up to half of their sentences, if they plead guilty on sentence reduction day.
Fourteen persons pleaded guilty in the most recent sentence reduction day on Thursday.
And 10 others pleaded guilty in the first sentence reduction day on May 22.
