Tougher penalties for cyber crimes are coming, as the Senate today passed 17 amendments to the new Cyber Crimes Act of 2015.

The Act addresses the use of computers for malicious communication, and unauthorized disclosure of personal data.

Information Minister, Senator Sandrea Falconer, says the law will provide greater protection from online predators.

The Act replaces the 2010 legislation of the same name.

It incorporates new offences such as computer-related fraud or forgery along with tougher penalties for certain cyber crimes.

Opposition Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, supports the Act, but says it doesn’t go far enough to protect Jamaicans from misuse of data by the police.
