Minister of Health, Horace Dalley is to brief the nation today on the country’s readiness for the mosquito-borne ZIka- Virus in light of Jamaica confirming its first case.

The press conference is scheduled for the Office of the Prime Minister, at 11 AM.

The first Jamaican to be infected with the virus was a four year old boy living in Portmore St. Catherine.

The child began showing symptoms on January 17 after earlier returning to Jamaica from travel to Texas in the United States.

He was investigated at the Bustamante Hospital for Children and samples sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency for testing on January 26.

The Ministry received the positive Zika virus test result from CARPHA late Friday evening.
