Permanent Secretary in the Health and Wellness Ministry, Dunstan Bryan, says hospitals across the island could experience another shortage of oxygen in the coming days.
The Public Health system experienced severe oxygen shortage at the weekend amid an unprecedented surge in Covid-19 cases.
Yesterday, the Health and Wellness Ministry got sufficient oxygen supplies from IGL to serve hospitals across the island.
He says the Ministry is hoping they don’t experience a repeat of what happened at the weekend.
But the permanent secretary says it’s possible with the rate of hospitalisations continuing to exceed the rate of discharge.
In the meantime, Bryan says 250 healthcare workers have registered to offer sessional services in the healthcare system.
The Health Ministry issued the call last week, for all retired and all active doctors and nurses for sessional service in public health facilities.
The Ministry says it needs the support to respond to a persistent surge in Covid-19 infections and hospitalisations.
