The Kingston and St. Andrew Health Department has served a closure notice on operators of the patient canteen at the University Hospital of the West Indies, UHWI, over breaches of the Public Health Act.
The notice was issued on Monday to Caterers in Motion, the operators of the canteen.
It’s to remain in effect until further notice.
According to the notice, the facility was ordered closed for breaches of food handling regulations.
When contacted Medical Officer of Health for Kingston and St. Andrew, Dr. Susan Strachan-Johnson, confirmed that the notice was issued.
However, she declined to share details, noting she would need to consult documentation before making a comment.
The public relations team at the Southern Regional Health Authority, SERHA, told our news centre they were awaiting a briefing from Dr. Strachan Johnson before commenting.
Repeated efforts to contact the Acting Chief Executive Officer at the UHWI, Fitzgerald Mitchell, were unsuccessful.
Similar efforts to get a comment from Senior Medical of Health at the hospital, Dr. Carl Bruce were also unsuccessful.
