Immediate Past President of the Jamaica Gasoline Retailers Association, JGRA, Trevor Heaven, is proposing that the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica, PCJ, be designated as the only entity allowed to import fuel into the island.

Petrojam, which is a subsidiary of the PCJ, imports fuel oil, refines it into gasoline and then sells it to retailers.

Under the existing rules, petroleum marketing companies are also allowed to import finished products and supply them to retailers.

Mr. Heaven says there’s no mechanism in place to monitor the quality of fuel imported by marketing companies.

According to Mr. Heaven, the lax nature of the regulatory environment facilitates breaches by some fuel importers.
