In a historic move this morning, the US flag was raised above its newly-reopened embassy in Havana, Cuba.
The flag was raised by the same three US Marines who lowered it in 1961.
It represents a major step in the restoration of full diplomatic relations between both countries.
Speaking at the ceremony, US Secretary of State, John Kerry, says his country must allow Cuba to forge its own destiny.
However, he says the US will continue to push for democratic principles and reforms, while urging the Cuban government to uphold it’s international commitments.
Secretary Kerry is also thanking Caribbean and Latin American leaders and Pope Francis, for their role in continually lobbying for the resumption of diplomatic ties.
He says the next major step will be to push toward lifting sanctions and embargoes on Cuba.
