The Independent Commission of Investigations, INDECOM, says an unidentified taxi driver died and a police officer injured following a shooting incident on King Street in Downtown, Kingston on Thursday.

INDECOM says based on preliminary information, the police have reported that four officers were on motorcycle patrol when they signaled the driver of a taxi to stop.

It’s alleged that the driver disobeyed the request, and in an effort to get away caused injury to one of the police officers.

It’s further reported that the police subsequently fired at the vehicle where upon examination, two persons, one the driver and female passenger, were seen with injuries.

INDECOM says its investigators can confirm that the injured occupants of the taxi were taken to the Kingston Public Hospital, KPH, for treatment.

The unidentified taxi driver succumbed to his injuries.

The Commission’s investigators say the injured police officer was treated and released.

INDECOM says its investigators continue to process the incident scene and undertake investigative action, including requests for footage from CCTV cameras in the area.

The Commission says an update with additional investigative actions completed will be provided.
