The Independent Commission of Investigations, INDECOM, has launched a probe into the fatal shooting of a civilian in Montego Bay, St. James early this morning.
Dead is Oneillio Bailey.
The Police say they received a radio message that men using a Blue Toyota motor car were carrying out a robbery.
A team of Police personnel responded by setting up a cordon on Humber Avenue.
According to the Police, a vehicle fitting the description of the motor car approached the cordon and attempted to hit one of the policemen
The Police say shots were fired from the car and a high speed chase ensued. During the chase the vehicle carrying the gunmen reportedly crashed into a wall on Cottage Road.
It’s further alleged that four men alighted from the vehicle, fired at the police and ran in different directions. Mr. Bailey was reportedly was shot and injured while he ran from the get-away vehicle.
He was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead. A firearm was allegedly seized in the incident.
The Police say another man who was seen in the nearby Coral Gardens area bleeding was picked and taken to hospital by them. He’s now being questioned.
INDECOM says a team of investigators and forensic examiners attended and processed the scenes and the body of the deceased.
The Policemen involved in the incident were served with notices to furnish INDECOM with their accounts of the incident.
Their weapons have also been taken out of circulation and packaged for submission to the forensic lab for analysis.
