Jamaicans are particularly vulnerable to the mosquito borne Zika virus, due to the high prevalence of Non Communicable Diseases, NCDs, among the adult population.

That’s according to Senior Technical Director in the Health Ministry, Dr. Sonia Copeland.

Dr. Copeland was speaking at the launch of Heart Month at the Spanish Court Hotel in New Kingston.

NCDs are on the rise in Jamaica due to poor diet, smoking and unhealthy lifestyles.

Dr. Copeland says approximately 80-percent of Jamaican women between 35 and 54 years old are either obese or overweight.

She’s suggesting that this will create problems for this group when Zika arrives on our shores.
