Lecturer in Economics at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Dr. Samuel Braithwaite, agrees that the government can give some relief to the poor.
Dr. Braithwaite was speaking last evening on Nationwide at 5.
He was reacting to Opposition Leader Mark Golding’s contribution to the budget debate yesterday.
Mr. Golding accused the government of reaping significant sums in taxes off the backs of the Jamaican people.
He said the government had collected over $200 billion in additional tax revenue over the last two years.
Dr. Braithwaite says the government must be careful in how it uses those additional tax revenues.
He’s suggesting that the government look at stemming inflation, especially among the most vulnerable in the country.
