National Security Minister, Dr. Horace Chang, says the long-term solution to Jamaica’s crime problem is channeling men into productive, income-generating sectors.
Dr. Chang says the government intends to start by addressing the issue in St. James.
The parish of St. James recorded the most murders in the country two years in a row before two subsequent States of Public Emergency were declared.
The National Security Minister says the parish also has a 70% school drop-out rate for young men which feeds into the problem.
Dr. Chang says young men tend to be more attracted to uniformed groups, as a result they’re moving to establish a full branch of the National Service Corp in the parish.
He says the Jamaica Defence Force will be taking over the Cornwall Automotive School in Flanker to help train young men.
