Former West St. Mary Member of Parliament, Jolyan Silvera, was denied bail when he appeared in the Gun Court in downtown Kingston on Tuesday.

The decision was handed down by Justice Vinette Graham Allen.

The 52-year-old Silvera is charged with the murder of his wife, Melissa Silvera. He’s also charged with using a firearm to commit a felony.

Lead defence attorney, King’s Counsel Peter Champagnie, says he’ll assess what steps must be taken next.

Melissa Silvera was found dead at her home in Stony Hill, St Andrew on November 10, 2023. Initial reports were that the 42-year-old woman died in her sleep from natural causes.

However, an autopsy later revealed that she died from gunshot wounds.

Silvera was arrested and charged in January this year. Tuesday’s bail hearing was his fifth time in court since being charged.

He’s to return to court on September 26, 2024.
