President of the Jamaica Teachers Association, Norman Allen, is urging Education Minister, Ronald Thwaites to ensure that persons recruited from the private sector to fill teaching shortages in Math and Science, are properly trained.

Minister Thwaites outlined the proposal in Parliament yesterday. He says the Ministry will be contracting retired teachers and professionals from the private sector, as a short term measure.

Mr. Allen says he supports the move to contract retired educators to fill the gap created by the migration of 500 math and science teachers over the past two years.

He says they can use their experience to serve as mentors for younger teachers.
