UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced that the country will go to the polls to elect a new administration on July 4.

He made the statement outside 10 Downing Street on Wednesday.

The statement comes after a day of mounting speculation in Westminster.

Sunak, the leader of the Conservative Party, is going up against the Labour Party’s Sir Keir Starmer.

In anticipation of the announcement, Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron cut short a trip to Albania, while Defence Secretary Grant Shapps delayed an overseas trip to attend cabinet.

Sunak was expected to announce a date in the fall, but has chosen the summer instead.
