Justice Minister, Delroy Chuck, has voiced his support for a repeal of the relevant sections of the Criminal Justice Act which allow for a reduction in sentencing once an accused pleads guilty.
The matter was the subject of discussion in the House of Representatives following calls for a repeal by North East St. Catherine MP, Kerencia Morrison.
The Justice Minister says judges seem to have interpreted the sentence reduction clause as an automatic right once a guilty plea is entered.
He says the Parliament should take a second look at the legislation.
The Minister says the plea negotiation mechanism will still allow for the consideration of mitigating circumstances.
The Minister says the Parliament should take up the issue as the matter of sentencing remains a major concern for judges and the public at large.
