Chief Operating Officer at Kingston Wharves, Mark Williams, is calling for a total re-design of the New Port West area, to avoid subsequent flooding events.

The area was flooded Tuesday afternoon following two hours of heavy rainfall. Thousands of commuters and motorists were stranded.

Mr. Williams says the flooding could have been avoided. He says the drainage system in the area is too small.

The Marcus Garvey Drive project was completed last November.

Yesterday Western St Thomas Member of Parliament, James Robertson, called on the Port Authority to fix the problem.

Mr. Robertson, who’s associated with a shipping company in the area, says the Port Authority has blocked the drainage system in the area, which caused the flooding.

But Mr. Williams says all the stakeholders have a role to play in addressing the problem.
