Never Again!

Opposition Senator, Lambert Brown, says this must be the last time the country has to adjust its legislation to accommodate a new foreign head of state.

Brown was responding to a measure by the government to substitute the Queen for the King in the enacting clause of the new firearms bill due to the passing of Britain’s Monarch.

The firearms bill which brings stiffer penalties for gun-related offences has now completed its legislative process in the Parliament which started when Jamaica’s constitutional head was still Queen Elizabeth the Second.

It will now be enacted under the reign of King Charles the Third.

Leader of Government Business, Kamina Johnson-Smith says the adjustment was done out of an abundance of caution.

Senator Johnson Smith however says both sides agree that it is time to move away from the monarchy.
