Nationwide News has been reliably informed that the Mayor of Lucea, Shernet Haughton, will be relinquishing that post soon.
It’s also understood that Ms. Haughton’s Deputy will also be resigning that post.
Nationwide News understands that Ms. Haughton will be quitting as Mayor, partly out of frustration.
It’s understood she’s not been receiving support from her colleague PNP Councillors on a number of projects. We’re told that she feels such support is crucial.
Contacted this afternoon, Mayor Haughton declined to comment on the matter.
She met on the weekend with General Secretary of the governing People’s National Party, Paul Burke.
When contacted today, Mr. Burke confirmed that they met.
But he’d only say the meeting was a ‘private’ one, where they discussed party organizational matters.
It’s understood that Ms. Haughton has already communicated to Mr. Burke that she’ll be stepping aside as Mayor.
The party hierarchy is expected to discuss the issue at an executive meeting at its headquarters.
It’s being reported that Mayor Haughton will be replaced by another PNP Councillor in the Hanover Parish Council, Wynter McIntosh.
In April, Mayor Haughton – who’s the Councillor for the Green Island Division – survived a no-confidence motion moved against her.
She’s had a shaky relationship with her colleague PNP Councillors.
She’s also been in a bitter battle with the Member of Parliament for Western Hanover, Ian Hayles.
Ms. Haughton became Mayor in March, 2012.
