Political party registration is to start in January of next year.

This is in keeping with the political party registration regulations and amendments to the Representation of the People Act.

The regulations proposed by the Electoral Commission of Jamaica were affirmed by both Houses of Parliament earlier this year.

Prime Minister Holness announced the gazetting of the Law during last week’s sitting of the House of Representatives.

The amendments make it mandatory for a political party to be registered if it’s going to contest an election.

The Prime Minister also informed the House that amendments to legislation which deal with campaign financing, will come into effect on March 1, 2018.

The Act also deals with how individuals and organisations can contribute to political parties and candidates.
